Temporary Exhibition presented concurrently at the National Archaeological Museum and the Numismatic Museum in collaboration with the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection

The National Archaeological Museum, the Numismatic Museum and the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection are joining forces for the first time and are jointly organising the temporary exhibition "MYTH AND COINAGE", which is presented concurrently in both Museums from 15 April until 27 November 2011.

The general supervision and co-ordination of the Exhibition is held by the Directors of the two Museums, Dr Nikolaos Kaltsas (NAM) and Despoina Evgenidou (NM) and the Curator of the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection Dr Dimitra Tsangari.

The Exhibition highlights the relationship between the Greek Mythology and the coinage of antiquity and focuses on the depiction, management and use of myth on the faces of coins from the 7th century BC onwards.

Two complementary titles describe the content of the Exhibition at each Museum."The Illustration of the Myth" is presented at the National Archaeological Museum while "The Use of the Myth" is presented at the Numismatic Museum.

The Exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue in Greek and English versions, with introductory texts and entries on all the exhibits.

The Exhibition at the National Archaeological Museum presents for the first time 261 coins from the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection, which numbers more than 10,000 items and is considered as one of the most profuse and important private collections on an international level, 71 coins from the Numismatic Museum and 79 choice artworks from the collections of the National Archaeological Museum, sculptures, vases and examples of metalworking.

The Exhibition at the Numismatic Museum presents 135 coins, 22 medals and 15 banknotes from its collections, 15 coins from the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection, 14 ancient artifacts from the collections of the National Archaeological Museum and 2 paintings from the NationalGallery.
